Everyone has some important tips to share with other business owners and a few even have a special offer to share. Check out their interviews and MOST IMPORTANTLY visit their websites and check out their services.  Every small business needs us now (and probably yours too!)

OH, And, learn from their mistakes.... hear what they've done wrong so you can do it right!

Lynn Cutler, Las Colinas Logo Mats  We make and distribute custom logo mats for multi-family industries. From businesses to apartments and places of worship we offer a comprehensive selection to cover it all.

Who do you consider your best customer or target audience? Our target audience is the apartment industry.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?  We had to shut down production and put things on back-order. We were able to take orders but deliver time-delayed. We typically have a big trade show in April and due to COVID it was delayed til September.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference?   We are working from home more and we have learned how to work more comfortably from home. We are keeping things a lot cleaner and have everyone wearing masks.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others?  When you have a problem with a customer going out to see for yourself what is happening has been really instrumental. For example, we once had mats delivered that were too high and the doors were not able to open. We want to handle a problem as soon as it comes up and I would recommend going out and seeing what is happening in person if possible.

What is most inspiring to you today?  Within the company we look for opportunities to help people. We offer work to those in need and donate. We like to be able to use some of the money we make to help others that are struggling.

Offer: We are offering a 10% discount for orders placed in August! (just mention this newsletter).

Kay Loposer, Reliant Prosthetics  Reliant Prosthetics is a privately owned business here in Dallas. We have been in business since 2001. We make artificial limbs and mostly we deal with lower limbs.

Who do you consider your best customer or target audience? Our clients are patients who are amputees. Everything we do has to be done under the direction from a physician or medical care taker.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?  COVID-19 has completely changed the way that we see patients. Some of the things we have done is upgraded all our cleaning. The patients do not come in the door and sit in the waiting room anymore. They call us when they are here and we get them right into the exam room so they don’t have to be around other people. We take their temperature, have them complete a questionnaire and everyone wears a mask.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others?  I had to learn about prosthetics and the business side about health care. I would say you always need to be learning and educating yourself to find new opportunities.

What is most inspiring to you today?  To see the courage and positive attitudes and the obstacles that the amputees overcome.

Beverly Bennett, Castle Gap Trading Company   We specialize in handcrafted sterling silver jewelry by Native American artists and premier designers in the United States. We are a family owned and operated business and have been in Preston center since 1973.

Who do you consider your best customer or target audience? Male and female, young and old that have confidence to wear art. We are looking for that person who is confident to wear something that no one else is going to be wearing.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?  We lost a lot of foot traffic. People are not shopping for fun, when they are shopping, they have a purpose.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference?  We have our own sanitizing stations in the store. The staff is always careful about wearing a mask, being accommodating and cleaning. We use our website and social media more.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others?  Personally, my mistakes are when I learn to do something, I am a very bad teacher. I have the tendency to believe that if I can do something than everyone can do the same. People cannot see what others think and communication is very important.

What is most inspiring to you today? My staff and the people who work for me. They are loyal, committed and invested. They are excited about the business and maintaining it.

Offer: We are offering 20% off anything in the store!

Randy and Juliana Carlson, The Hair Bar  We are a blowout bar and we do all kinds of hair styling from blowouts to makeup, hair extensions and smoothing treatments. We are a specialty salon and we specialize in style and make up. Last year we were named Best Blowout in Dallas by D-Magazine. We also won the award for best of service in Preston Hollow.

Who do you consider your best customer or target audience? Women, specifically working women & women who socialize often. Our clients range from high school students to ladies in their 80s. It is for those with expendable income. It is a luxury and pampering service.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?  Salons had to close March 21-May 8 and that was the biggest challenge. Since re-opening there has been apprehensions of people to resume their lifestyle. We also missed out on a lot of events we typically prepare for like proms and graduations. In the summer and fall we typically prepare for more weddings.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference?  We posted on our social media that we are complying by the CDC specifications. We all wear masks and gloves to apply makeup and we are sanitizing. Clients are seated farther apart. We communicate to our clients through social media and email to let them know we are taking extra precautions.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others?  When we purchased our 3rd salon, the biggest mistake that we made was not having a contingency plan in place in case we had a catastrophic event.

What is most inspiring to you today? The ability to navigate through all the assistance programs out there. It was inspiring to us that we were able to get through all of that. That validated us as a business and business owners.

Offer: We are offering a complimentary scalp and neck massage OR a deep conditioning hair mask for first time clients.

For bridal parties of 8 or more: the bride will get to choose one of the two services for FREE either hair OR makeup.

We are also offering 10% off a keratin smoothing treatment to anyone that mentions this article. This treatment is to renew and restore any damaged hair.

Larry Leon, Venture Commercial Real Estate   I am in commercial real estate. I am in the shopping center leasing industry; my personal specialization is representation so I help retailers find locations for their concepts. My more precise specialty over the last several years has been entertainment real estate movie theaters, bowling allies etc.

Who do you consider your best customer or target audience? A large tenant wanting multiple locations for example Dave and Busters would be an ideal client.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?  With my specialization in entertainment a lot of my tenants were hurt badly. As a result, my tenant representation has slowed down.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference?  I have been talking to a lot of top-notch people asking where we think the market is going. I have shifted to a more consultive arrangement and I am charging by the hour to take on people that are having problems with their leases. I am also taking the time to look for new initiatives and new alliances.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others?  Not spending too much money and focus on saving so you have a larger cushion. I would also recommend diversifying your client base.

What is most inspiring to you today? I think the fact that kindness is coming out of the pandemic and that people are really trying to help one another. People are looking for the silver lining of what has gone down due to the pandemic. We have started to pull together again.

Offer: If someone is in restaurant & entertainment retail, we have had enormous success finding winning locations. If you are a tenant and are having challenges with your lease, we are offering consulting.

Dayton Macatee, Macatee Engineering  We do civil engineering design and consulting for land projects. We work for private developers. We do everything from single to multifamily projects. We respond to what our client wants to do and build out to the existing street.

Who do you consider your best customer or target audience? Our ideal client are developers who are building sub-divisions anywhere from 10 or 20 lots.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?  It is more difficult with the cities; they have heavy restrictions on how you can interface with them. We also had to send everyone home for 2 months and our efficiency was lower, however we have figured out how to move.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference? Other than the new methods for interfacing with cities we are just about back to normal. We are at the office and everyone has their own work space.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others? Not having a firm enough budget got me in a pickle a few times with the IRS. I would recommend having and maintaining enough capital to weather the flows of business.

What is most inspiring to you today? I think the thing that inspires me the most right now is when I see someone who decides they are going to do what they need to do to take responsibility for themselves and take care of others. Everyone has the ability to do something positive – especially for others.

Offer: We are currently hiring. Contact directly for more information.

Pam Moore, Maple Shade Spa We are a full-service spa with some hair and nails; we specialize in massages, facials, and med spa treatments. We have been in business almost 20 years; we are in a unique location in an almost 5000 sq ft Victorian home. It is very peaceful and the energy is very good.

Who do you consider your best customer or target audience? We serve a wide population young and old but our best customer are women 50-65 years old. We like to target more towards 30-45 year old range.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?  Being slow and learning how to figure out how to staff and hire effectively. There have been times with not enough staff and then times we have too many. There is a great unknown.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference?  We are having more personable interactions. We are helping clients with what they are needing and doing more education and personal emails with product knowledge. We are now offering to ship our products to clients. We are also in communication with our clients more, we have started to call them. Inside the spa we are taking temperatures and we all wear a mask and face shield. We are following all the standard protection guidelines to make people feel safe and comfortable.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others?  I think one of the mistakes we made was getting on Groupon. It was discounted too much.

What is most inspiring to you today?  One of the more inspiring things is that our normal convention was able to host a spa party online. It was the "I’m ready to spa" party and it was a tropical theme. Everyone was instructed to create a tropical space in their home. The party started with a tropical drink and we did a zoom meeting facial party!

Offer: We are offering our classic facial and massage for $65 (normally $80).
