The 9th Edition

A collection of short interviews and education from local business owners with amazing insights to today's challenges.

We virtually interviewed some of the top small businesses to take a look at what's really happening during the COVID-19 Crisis. Everyone has some important tips to share with other business owners and a few even have a special offer to share. Check out their interviews and MOST IMPORTANTLY visit their websites and check out their services.  Every small business needs us now (and probably yours too!)

OH, And, learn from their mistakes.... hear what they've done wrong so you can do it right!

Bill Harris, City Sewing Machine, LLC We are an industrial sewing company. We distribute all the name brand sewing machines and supplies. We do not do domestic only industrial.

Who do you consider your best customer or Target audience? For Dallas it would be a furniture upholstery and mattress manufacturer.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business? We had to lock our doors and we let people in on appointment only.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference? I’m very appreciative of the PPP money we received, it tied us over so we didn’t have to borrow money to survive.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others? One of the best pieces of advice I received was from a vender. Don’t look at making a profit every week, look at the year even. Once I started doing that and looking at it from a longer range it really dropped the stress level for me. It is also important to stay on top of your office and your team. You can do everything right but you can lose it in your office if you don’t have good people handling the books.

What is most inspiring to you today?  I would have to say one of the things I enjoy most is being able to provide jobs, it's inspiring to see them come in and have the desire to learn the skills and take the industry forward.

Tamra Michelle, District Climb We are a VersaClimber studio; it is a 30 min rhythmic based class. We have instructors take you on a journey with different types of reaches, we have a lighting structure to make it more fun and interesting and our music runs the class.

Who do you consider your best customer or Target audience? Class is for everyone; people bring their kids or younger siblings to older parents in their 70s. We teach to the baseline but always allow modifications. Mid to late 20-high 40s is our general target market.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business? We had to close. We opened back up on May 25. Business has been difficult since re-opening.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference? I think its about talking to customers and reaching out to them. We have offered private session and semi-private groups 1-4.  We are doing what we can to make our climbers more comfortable.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others?  If you learn from a mistake then its not really a mistake. I would call them missteps. It's things you learn from to do better the next time around. For my industry, clients come for service/instructors/music - you don’t want to get ahead of yourself and spend a lot more money than you have.

What is most inspiring to you today? What’s inspiring to me is how people adapt to difficult situations and how they preserve especially in our industry and in 2020.

Brett Baker, EVS Supply We are a retail and distributor in the lighting market. We also sell batteries that are from different manufactures and we build battery packs and sell those both nationally and internationally.

Who do you consider your best customer or Target audience? Industrial customers, people that are putting battery packs into their applications. The lighting side is going to be the school districts and the city.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business? Reduction in sales, people just not getting out and placing orders due to the uncertainty. We reduced hours for our employees for a time period and we are not back to full hours or full pay.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference? We have just released a completely redone website and we also took an action to reduce expenses. We increase marketing and started making an investment in systems and tools.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others? I would say, some of our products have long lead time and we built up too much inventory.

What is most inspiring to you today? Knowing that this time will pass. I have full confidence there is a bright future we just have to get to it.

Ryan Joaquim, Cut Form LLC, We manufacture top of the line uniforms for high school drill team (Texas dance teams). We started in 1978. We also offer retail & PPE.

Who do you consider your best customer or Target audience? Our best customer are companies that we have in the portfolio, cheers and reflection. Outside companies would have to do with the school districts.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business? The impact has been positive and negative. We have been able to partner with hospitals to offer PPE equipment. Negative because the pandemic is ongoing, we have at least 2 people on our team who have been affected directly.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference? We have instilled a very strong set of rules in house and we have always reminded our employees to be cautious outside of work.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others?  We paid extra – when you're in product development you try to do everything yourself it's important to keep asking questions even though it might sound dumb or uninformed. Use your network of suppliers to find the answers, that will get you a better and cheaper result.

What is most inspiring to you today? What inspires me is all of the stories you can find online through podcast and YouTube. The shared level of content that can help you find the answers that you’re looking for and through social media you can build connections with peers in the industry.

Mary Metzler, Quality High-Tech Services Inc. We started in 1987 as a type writer and 10 key repair center and from there we morphed to doing white glove services. We also do hardware repair and supply tech on site and over the phone.

Who do you consider your best customer or Target audience? We are all over the place – we deal with computers and printers and anything that can be hooked to them. We work on anything from servers, to routers, wireless systems and nodes.

What's been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business? We had to shut down in April and lost contracts. There was a lot of fear. We picked up business by focusing on the remote services that we offer.

What are some actions you have taken to make a difference? CDC recommendations. We have the gloves, masks and shields. We are wiping things down and making sure we are keeping everything clean. Our remote management team went to work from home and we are keeping everyone separated, masked and gloved.

It's been said that smart people learn from their mistakes, but the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What are some mistakes that you’ve made that could help others? I think my biggest fault is to stay focused on running a business and not a family.

What is most inspiring to you today? The election has been inspiring and given me a lot of hope more than that I’ve been looking forward to retirement.

Offer: We have a flat fee for people that bring their computers in for a diagnostic. This includes any labor as well as the cleaning of the unit. I will reduce it to $99 for anyone that mentions ActionCOACH. (valid for 1 year) ($119 value)
